THE TOWN OF WHALES
Machi, Hotaru, and Asahiko learn that Machi's missing brother is in Tokyo, and plan a trip there during the last summer holiday of their high school years.Like whales, which once lived on land but chose a new life in the sea, people eventually outgrow their childhoods, gaining and losing something in the process. Tsuruoka's directorial debut illustrates the brilliance of adolescence, its obliviousness to immaturity, its dangers, and its seductiveness. It captures the expressions and emotions of children confronting complex feelings for the first time, and seeks an answer to the question, “Why do people become adults?”
