Introduction
Eluana Englaro becomes a national tragedy in Italy when the decision is taken to put an end to her life after 17 years of vegetative state. Born in Piacenza, Italy, Marco Bellocchio’s feature debut, Fists in the Pocket, was presented at Locarno in 1965 and attracted international attention. His major filmography includes The Conviction (1991), a Silver Bear winner at Berlinare, Good Morning Night (2003), Vincere (2009) and Sorelle Mai (2010). He received the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement at the Venice International Film Festival in 2011.
