With the director Shinji Somai, he made his theater film debut with Kawaiihito (1998). His major works include Pakodate-jin (2002), Dolphin Blue (2007). School Days with a Pig (2008) won the Audience Award and Toyota Earth Grand Prix Special Jury Prize at the 21st Tokyo International Film Festival. He is an associate professor at Tohoku University of Art & Design.
