Born 1956 in Tokyo and making his debut with Fancy Dance in 1989, Suo is no stranger to the Japanese Academy Awards. He earned his first in 1992 for Sumo Do, Sumo Don't then swept all 13 categories in 1996 with Shall We Dance?, which was remade in Hollywood starring Richard Gere. His latest dramatic feature was I Just Didn't Do It in 2007. His ballet documentary, Dancing Chaplin was released in 2011.
