Introduction

A powerful historical biography of influential philosopher Hannah Arendt, whose controversial report on the war crimes trial of ex-Nazi Adolf Eichmann in the early 1960s led to her famous concept of the “banality of evil.”

Hannah Arendt was a German Jewish philosopher known for her groundbreaking analysis of the origins of totalitarianism. This film, set in 1960s New York, is a historical drama that focuses on an episode when she had already gained renown and came under criticism for her report on the trial of a former high-ranking Nazi official. Barbara Sukowa, who plays the protagonist to perfection, has starred in many of director Margarethe von Trotta's films including Rosa Luxemburg (1985) and is a close colleague of this filmmaker who continues to make works concentrating on politics and women.
